What's Happening in Bali?

Bali Airport Heat (Thermal) Scanners

We hope tourists are being scanned BEFORE getting on the plane in their home countries, however, you will be scanned at Bali airport, you may not even know it.

Be aware, that if you get flagged as having a high temperature, that will be the end of your holiday. You will be taken immediately to isolation in either Sanglah Hospital Denpasar, Tabanan or Gianyar.

We currently have 3 isolation hospitals in Bali, and a fourth being set up in Jimbaran. You will spend 14 days there, minimum, even if your tests come back negative. All passengers in the seats around you will be contacted, and may also need to come in for testing.

Health Card - at the airport

You will be asked to fill out a form about your health.  This is a legal document, do not lie on this document, for the sake of others, and so you do not end up in jail.

You will find Hand sanitizer dispensers on the walls at the airport

At your hotel

Some hotels in Bali will check your temperature, and ask that you use hand sanitizer upon check in.

At Restaurants/nightclubs

Some restaurants/nightclubs in Bali will check your temperature, and ask that you use hand sanitizer upon before allowing entrance

Visa

If your countries border is closed, as it was with China , the precedent has been set that your visa will be extended with no charge.

However, don't come to Bali hoping your border will close, so you can stay longer, with a free visa.

Overstay is still 1 million per day, so, if your country is still open, you can go home.

If you are just afraid to fly home, but your borders are open, you WILL NOT get a free extension.

Please note, that so far 9 tourists have been in isolation in Bali, and there has not been any mention of paying an overstay.

However, if you are in hospital for any other reason, such as a bike accident etc, you will still pay overstay, even with a Doctors letter saying you cannot fly, so make sure you have medical insurance to cover the overstay fee.

What if you are in Bali and feel ill?

If you start to feel ill and think you may have Coronavirus, stay in your hotel room, do not go out.

Call the reception to have them call the Coronavirus Bali Hotline, and a medical team will come to you. You will need to provide information on your travel movements in Bali and who you have had close contact with, so they can be informed, should you have Coronavirus.

It is important to always consider others to contain this virus.

Take it seriously, stay put, do not get in a taxi and go to a Hospital, they will come to you, and if it is considered you need to go to hospital  to be tested, then you will be taken.

Tests will only be conducted at the hospital, and are sent to the Mainland, so you will have to wait in isolation for the results.

Be considerate

Don’t report falsely on the Immigration Documents.

We have advised on this one before. In the past many people have put false hotels on embarkation documents, so they don’t get telemarketers calling their hotels.

If someone next to you was on the plane, or you have been in contact with someone who has Coronavirus, then they need to find you.

Tracking this virus is important to contain it.

Consider the Balinese Business Owner

 Booking Hotels

Please do not book small hotels on sites like Booking.com that say you can cancel at the last minute no charge, don’t give the Hotel Owner false hope of future bookings.

You need to consider the hotel owners now, if all rooms are booked out using this method ,and you cancel, then they have a loss of income, they may have staff hours and wages promised and depending on those future bookings

Booking Drivers

Again, don’t book and then cancel, if you have not paid something.  Drivers here are currently selling their cars, as they are scared they will not be able to pay their car payments. Drivers will be happy to hold your payments till next time, but don’t let them plan your work, only for you to cancel if you plan to pay cash on the day. Wait till you get here before you book your favorite driver, if you only pay cash, don’t make any promises they can't bank on.

Booking Tours

Look at tours that will allow date changes.  Don't go booking tours where you can cancel last minute, this is unfair on the tour operator.  Note even if you book through large booking sites like Viator, if you cancel, the tour operator receives nothing., so wait to book your tours or choose a tour that allow date changes.

Once your Trip has started

Here are some hygiene tips for your travel

Forget the toilet paper

Bring some hand sanitizer, and we highly suggest to get yourself some Dettol or any alcohol antibacterial wipes (not baby wipes), you can use them on the plane, at the airport etc
Image

On the Plane

Just by sitting on the plane next to someone with the virus, but no symptoms, has an extremely low chance of catching the virus. However, WHO advice is to keep at least 1 metre from someone who is coughing. We suggest you wipe your arms rests with Dettol wipes or alcohol wipes before using them.

If you are one of those people that sometimes get a dry tickle from the plane AC, then cough into a tissue and then put the tissue in a plastic bag. Consider everyone else around you, considering others is one of many ways to contain this virus.

At the Airport

When you are waiting, remember the following tips:

  • wipe the armrest of your seat with your Dettol wipes
  • Use your wipes or alcohol based hand sanitizer after using the toilet (door handles etc)
  • Use your wipes or alcohol based hand sanitizer after fingerprinting
  • Cough into a tissue and dispose of it thoughtfully

Once you get to Bali

Here are some hygiene tips for once you arrive

Good Hygine

Money

We have said this before, in relation to Typhoid and other nasties we have on this Island,. The money is filthy, it’s made of paper, it soaks up everything. So, as before Coronavirus, clean your hands after handling money and don’t touch your eyes or mouth. Never ever let a child put the money here in their mouth.

Contaminated surfaces

Although there has not been a case of transmission from surfaces here, if an infected person did cough on your table before you sat down, then you need to consider the risk, although extremely low at present, due to low cases, and strict isolation of people with symptoms.

Eating Out

The best thing about being on a holiday is eating out. If you are at all concerned, if you worry that a surface may have been contaminated, it’s your health so don’t be shy, but don’t be demanding or impatient. You may ask for your table to be wiped down with disinfectant. Even better, bring your own Dettol wipes, or alcohol wipes, and wipe down the table and chairs before you sit down. Especially the back top of the chair that everyone touches to pull the chair out, also under the sides, that everyone uses to pull the chair in. Note, someone infected had to cough on the table or in their hand, and then touch the chair, low risk, but it’s up to you if you wish to just have peace of mind.

If you really are concerned about surfaces, don’t be afraid to bring your own cutlery, coffee mug, glasses etc. Many warungs use wax paper on bamboo baskets, this is a great way to avoid contamination, just don’t touch the basket and then your mouth etc, without disinfecting, however, there is less chance than on glass, plastic or metal surfaces for the virus to survive.

Heat

It was first believed that Indonesia and many other countries experiencing extreme heat when the virus first hit, was the reason for less cases. Now it is only being considered that the virus may not survive as long on surfaces due to the heat. It can last for a few hours up to a several days, however WHO research seems to be that exposure to sunlight, heat and humidity lowers the time it can survive on surfaces. So, with this new information consider eating in open air restaurants, not inside AC cafes.

Going to the toilet

Well, not that public toilet seats are ever safe, but remember the tap and the door handle, disinfect your hands after you have washed your hands, as touching the tap to turn it off is defeating the purpose of washing your hands. This has always been a must in Bali due to Typhoid etc

Once you get to your hotel

We suggest you have a small bottle of Dettol in your room for good disinfectant hand washing, small 45ml and 75ml bottles are available in Bali. Put a bottle in the bathroom and everyone can do a proper disinfect every time they use the bathroom.

Tours

Consider Private Tours, so you are not sharing a vehicle or eating with others, the reason for this is that not everyone may be as diligent as yourself

Transport

Consider Private Transport rather than the free mini bus shuttles to Boats, unless your group size is filling the minibus.

Fingerprint machines, ATMS

Elevators, escalator rails, touch screens, just clean your hands after touching any of them.

In Jakarta, they now, actually have new Elevator attendants in all shopping malls, so no-one can push the button in any lifts, only the Elevator attendant.
