Caldera Rim Ride

Challenging Ride

Level of Difficulty

This ride is about a 4.5 out of 5 difficulty level.

Length of Ride

Its 39 km (or 24.2 miles) and it takes about 6-9 hours to ride.

If planning this ride, its best to hire our bicycles for 24 hours, so you are not rushing to get back before we close at 5.30pm

Suitable Bikes to Hire

Due to the very steep climbs of this ride it is best to hire our Premier bikes, they are designed for these conditions.
It is very important the bike is the right size for you as well, so best to book your bikes in advance.

The Adventure
Choose your route

From our office you head out towards Mt Batur. Continue along the main road. This is the best direction to go as it means the last part is downhill.

If you wish to go the other way, then you will need to go up the very steep hill to Penelokan village first (it can be done, but there are parts you may need to get off and push your bike)

Mapped out with Plenty of Tips

We have mapped out the route on google maps, you can get the link below. There are plenty of points where we have given some instructions on where to turn and some photos to make it easier.

Children

This ride is not recommended for children or teenagers under 16 years old

Tips for your ride
Bring water

Make sure you take plenty of water, or some small money to buy extra in Songan village.

English is limyed, if you say Aqua, they will know what you want.

Carry Your Snacks/Food

You will need to take a snack. There are only local warungs selling local food and many vendors do not speak English. They only take cash.

Or wait till you get to Penelokan and splurge on a meal with a view.
Plan Your Day

Its important to head off early, as this ride can take all day. Sun set is at 6.15pm, you don''t want to be riding the streets in the dark as we do not have street lighting.

If you wish to visit Pura Ulun Batur Temple, you will need a sarong, sash and me need a Udeng (headwear)

If you plan to visit the Museum, it closes at 3pm, sometimes earlier when quiet.
In your pack

A wise traveller would never skip this important step. Ensure you have a small first aid kit in case you skid on the gravel.

A small bike repair kit. Its a long ride and we cannot go out to meet you on the otherside of the volcano, so be preaprd for anything.
